All Now 'Crowded Basement' Interview

I have been joined by All Now who have joined me to chat about their new single 'Crowded Basement' so you can find out more about the song

Welcome back to Totally Music, how have you been?

Really good! Cheers for having us. We’re back in the studio for a few days recording a new song that we’re really excited about.

On the 22nd July released you new single “ Crowded Basement” would you like to tell us a bit about it?

It’s probably the most deliberately poppy and simple song we have. It’a kind of a love letter to the places we used to visit and play in Manchester. Most of which aren’t there anymore. It’s an uplifting song but lyrically it’s quiet melancholic about getting older and pining for when things were easier.

Where did the inspiration for the song come from?

Our bassist Mark put a playlist together that’s full of all the bands we listened to when we were starting out - stuff like The Starting Line and Motion City Soundtrack and I was listening to that on repeat when we wrote this song.

How did you come up with the art work?

We wanted something a bit iconic and unmistakably Mancunian. The Roadhouse was our favourite place to play and fits in with the architecture vibe we’ve gone for so far.

What was a highlight from the creation of the song?

Probably the middle 8. The whole build up to the end of the song. I really like that and it was one of the first times I felt we made the most of having three guitars.

What has the reaction to the song been like from your fans?

Positive I think but it’s early days so far.

If you could perform the song at any venue in the world where would it be and why?

Would have to be The Roadhouse! It’s on the artwork and inspired the lyrics so it would need to be there I guess.

What have you learnt from creating this song?

That it’s ok to go for the simplest option sometimes when songwriting. The most impressive thing technically doesn’t always make for the best listener experience.

What’s next for you?

We’re gonna put out a six track EP I think towards the end of the year. In the meantime we’re writing and recording for the next one.
