I have been joined by Wil from Luna Kiss who has answered some questions about their musical career so you can find out a bit more about the band!
Welcome to Totally Music would you like to introduce yourself?
Hiya, I’m Wil from Coventry rock band Luna Kiss.
How did you all meet?
The three of us, Chris, James and I all met at Warwickshire College in Leamington at the sprightly age of 16. We were studying a BTEC in music.
How did you come up with the name Luna Kiss?
We’ve had that question a few times over the years. For us, the two words I guess represent the type of music we are trying to make. Luna (the moon) represents the magical, mystical, and euphoric energy of the band and Kiss represents the romantic, sensual, and passion.
How would you describe the music you create? On paper we’re an ‘alternative rock band’. We pull influences from all over the rock spectrum indie, punk, metal, classic rock. We also all listen to a lot of other music which rubs of one way or another. I guess if you’re looking for buzz words I’d say gritty, swagger, bold rock and roll.
What has been your favourite song you’ve written and why?
Lust For Blood has to be my favourite song. When we started writing last years EP one of my main goals was to challenge myself as a vocalist. Push my lyric writing and push my vocal range. I get to sing some of the best lyrics we’ve written and really carve up some vocal melodies.
What has been the most memorable show you e played and why?
We’ve been a band in some capacity since 2013 so we’ve played a lot of shows. More recently our passion and excitement comes from playing intimate shows that really make magic happen. We played a sold-out show at The Tin in Coventry last year to 130 people and it was pure magic. On the other end of the spectrum, we’ve played massive festivals in Germany to 1000s of people. It’s like asking a kid to choose his favourite toy haha.
What can fans expect from one of your gigs?
We literally live for playing live as a band. We used to take everything seriously and spend hours creating a performance we thought was ‘professional’. We learnt a few years back to be a lot more comfortable with who we are and our personalities. So live, you’re going to get an energetic, full-on rock and roll performance BUT we love to laugh and love to be in the company of good energy. There is always a lot of onstage jokes, banter and good fun in between all the filthy riffs and emotional choruses.
What has been your biggest accomplishment as a band?
Staying together for over 10 years AND staying friends whilst doing it! We set out as teenagers to make a living out of this business. It’s HARD, we then set out to make a career financially out of this band, IT IS HARD. On the outside, to a lot of people, we look like we’re doing well. But it comes at a cost and that can take its toll on anyone. I am literally in a band with guys where our love for one another comes first, our passion for making music with our friends is what we love to do. We’ve been challenged by a lot of ups and downs in this industry as a band but I speak for the others when I say, we are enormously proud of how we’ve stuck it out and grown stronger friendships through it all.
If you could give one piece of advice to anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps what would it be?
Work hard on your instruments, push yourselves to be the best YOU can be, put your friendships first and make sure you run your own race. It is so easy to try and compete with other artists. This really stops you focusing on your goals and how as a band you can attain them.
