I have been joined by 'Moa' who has answered some questions about so you can find out about their music!
Welcome to Totally Music would you like to introduce yourself?
Absolutely! I'm MOA - a performer, writer and producer who makes alternative music about mental health and other stigmatised subjects. I'm here to make you feel understood and safe in a world that doesn't cater to people with mental health challenges.
What got you into music?
Honestly, I don't know! It's ingrained in me. I have silly little tapes from when I was about 6 years old making songs about spiders and chewing gum. There was never an "aha" moment for me. It's just always been what I was supposed to do.
Who or what inspires you?
At the moment I feel so inspired by the female, trans and non-binary music community claiming their space in the industry. I feel like we're part of a time where the music industry is being challenged to its core and I think it is the best thing to ever happen to it and us.
What was your most difficult song to write?
'Ghost' for sure. I had to reframe this traumatic and heart breaking event to something more hopeful and it took me years to be in a headspace in which that was possible.
What is your favourite song you have written and why?
'Ghost' again! It's not just a homage to the individual I have personally lost, but to anyone who's ever been on the brink or past it. It's in memory of pain, desperation and agony. To those lost and those who survived. It's never not going to be relevant.
What is your proudest musical achievement?
Self-producing my debut EP 'Beat'! It was so intense and so weird and so worth it.
What has been your favourite performance to date and why?
I have to say my EP release at the Grace in Islington. I had my incredibly talented friends Terrianne and Catty perform on the night and the air was just thick of happiness and power and love. One of the happiest days of my life, without a doubt.
What can your fans expect from a live show?
A lot of heart,a lot of belting, and a lot of theatrics. And plenty of eyebrow action according to my friends.
Where do you see yourself musically in 5 years?
That's hard! But I'm manifesting that I'm still living a purposeful life doing the one thing I've always wanted and needed to do. That must be as close as we get to happiness, no?
What’s next for you? Ohh this is a super fun one! I've actually been chosen for Hotvox's NEW BLOOD competition, which puts me in the running of performing at Isle of Wight festival this summer. The quarter finals are taking place at Hoxton Underbelly on March 2nd, and you can. See you there!
