Recently I was lucky enough to be able to chat with Okfat Kanis, who has spoken about his musical journey.
Welcome Oktaf, would you like to introduce yourself?
Oktaf: Hello I'm Oktaf Kanis, I'm from Indonesia, my type of music is alternative rock but sometimes depending on my mood I want to make songs in different genres. I was born in Jakarta, 1995.
How did you get into music?
Oktaf: At first I really liked listening to songs, then I wanted to make music when I was a kid, and finally I decided to study music, I did piano and guitar lessons. When I was a teenager I decided to make a band, and my band lasted about 5 years, and seconds before disbanding me and my band had released a single, but not long after that my band disbanded, because of their busy schedules. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 I decided to make a song, and in 2021 I processed it with recordings and I gave birth to my first album called “Living in Infamy” on August 18, 2021.
What is your first musical memory?
Oktaf: Hmmm maybe when I first performed
You’ve recently released your new single ‘Starlight’ would you like to tell us about it?
Oktaf: Yeah sure, "Starlight" means peace. But in this song, I tell an admiration for someone so they want to invite her/him to a starlight which means peace in life, it can be peace on earth or in heaven.
The lyric video for ‘Starlight’ has amazing graphics, what was the process behind its creation?
Oktaf: Yes, of course, I made it by myself, and it really challenged me to make a lyric video like that, I don't really have any expertise in that field, but I have to try it. And I'm proud of the result cause it's not so bad, when it was made I really enjoyed it.
What would be your dream venue to play a gig at and why?
Oktaf: Hmmm glastonbury of course, because there are a lot of great British bands playing there, so I think that's my dream, hopefully it will come true.
What is your proudest accomplishment as a musician?
Oktaf: I think that if my music is appreciated by people, it will be a matter of pride for me as a musician.
What advice would you give to someone wanting a career in music?
Oktaf: Keep doing it, don't be shy about releasing a work, you must remain optimistic about making music, even if at the beginning your music is still not appreciated, and if you really have a passion there, keep trying until your work is appreciated by people.
If you could collaborate with anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?
Oktaf: This is very interesting, I still choose Keith Richards as guitarist for me with his very unique guitar riff, and I will collaborate with David Bowie of course, sadly David Bowie has left us all, okay the next option, I will choose Liam Gallagher, I like his vocal style, so that still a rock and roll in my opinion.
What’s next for you?
Oktaf: Hmmm okay, I will release a single, between 3 or 4 songs, then I will release my second album this year, if this year is not in a hurry to release it, then I will do the release in the following year, it's not a problem for me, so just wait it out.
